Eating and drinking
Located in Spitalfields, on the boundary between the City and Shoreditch, we are spoiled for choice when it comes to eating and drinking. Spitalfields and the streets around Bishops Square and Brick Lane offer a fantastic range of options.
After a couple of years as a trainee at the London office, you’ll have your own list, but try these for starters:
Breakfast and Coffee
Carluccio’s is great for a tasty, authentic Italian breakfast – if you are feeling fragile from the night before, they do great breakfast baps.
Canteen is a great choice for a sit-down breakfast (as well as offering a wider all day-menu).
Patisserie Valerie is tough to beat, with too many mouth-watering pastries to resist.
St. John Bread and Wine on Commercial Street is a wine and bakery shop with a less formal manner of dining.
Blixen – a fashionable take on the timeless brasserie concept, ideal for brunch.
Goodman dry-ages its meat on site, offering fantastic steaks and one of the best Californian wine lists in the City.
Poncho No.8’s gourmet burritos are so good, they have been voted the best burrito in the city. The best news is they are a stones throw from the office.
If you like a little music with your drink, The Big Chill Bar off Brick Lane offers live entertainment most evenings, from Indie Rock to Hip Hop.
The Drift in the Heron Tower offers some of the nicest cocktails in the area – make sure you arrive early as Thursday’s and Friday’s are very busy.
Situated on Broadgate Terrace, Jamies is the perfect spot for an after work drink, with an open terrace for those summer evenings
If you fancy something a little less conventional, Shoreditch offers a wealth of opportunities, including:
Nightjar is a traditional 1920’s speakeasy offering a selection of cocktails with their own twist, accompanied by live music.
The slightly unconventional Callooh Callay Bar won the Tales of the Cocktail ‘Worlds Best Menu’ award so is definitely worth a few visits.
Sport and fitness
With so many facilities on-site and something to suit everyone, we think you’ll be inspired to work out and take part in activities with the new friends you’ll make working at the firm.
Allen & Overy has a first class on-site fitness centre with:
- fresh towels provided daily
- gym equipped with various cardio machines, weights and vibrating power plates
- multi-purpose sports hall where you can play basketball and table tennis
- fitness studio hosting classes such as spinning, yoga and zumba
- sauna situated in the changing rooms
If you like squash, Allen & Overy has an agreement with Slim Jims which is just five minutes from the office and you can hire the squash courts for free.
A lot of people keep active by running to and from work, or during lunchtimes and the ground floor changing rooms and lockers facilitate this perfectly. The river is only a 10-minute jog away and the wide pavements along the South Bank is a great place for a run.
Cycling is a popular way of getting to work with secure parking under the office for 300 bikes, as well as showers, changing rooms and lockers specially reserved for cyclists. Plus, the firm offers an interest-free loan to help you to get a new bike and accessories.
3-a-side football is smaller and less popular than 5-a-side, but ferociously competitive! 3-a-side football in the sports hall attracts partners and trainees alike. Most departments have a regular lunchtime slot and weekly emails invite anyone and everyone to take part.
If sailing interests you, there are onshore theory courses organised throughout the year for those wanting to improve their knowledge. The real highlights are the two weekend regattas each year which you could have the opportunity to be involved in.
At Allen & Overy we support a number of teams, including football on a Wednesday evening and rugby at the weekend. The standard varies but it’s always typically competitive with regular fixtures against rival firms.
Spitalfields shops are a real treat! With a selection of independent boutique, fabulous fashion and accessories for him and her, you really do need to explore what’s on the office doorstep.
Spitalfields Market will never fail to inspire you – with everything from casual dresses, modern artwork to Venetian jewellery, the market is a great place to pick up a treat for yourself or a last minute birthday present for a friend.
Absolute Vintage on Hanbury Street is one of the largest vintage shoe and handbag collection in the UK.
Author on Commercial Street – London’s best-kept shoe secret.
The Lomography Gallery Store on Commercial Street is always interesting – the world of camera equipment is immense!
Traffic People always has a gorgeous collection of bag, shoes, jewellery and a full choice of affordable high-end designs.
For keen cyclists there is an endless choice of specialist shops for clothing and accessories including both Cycle Surgery and Evans (both offering emergencies repair services if you happen to need it!).
There really is so much to explore and enjoy so close to the office – at the Spitalfields Market.
Culture and Arts
There are always events taking at Spitalfields and you’ll find there is something that appeals to everyone.
Within Allen & Overy we offer a wide range of cultural activities from dance classes and choral groups to string quartets. We put on a full-scale musical production every year, and this year performed Oklahoma at Opera Holland Park to raise money for charity.
The acclaimed Arcola Theatre is just a short ride on the Overground – Tuesdays are “pay what you can” nights, while Rich Mix is a mixed arts venue with a decent cinema.
For live music Rough Trade can be found just off Brick Lane – one of London’s most popular independent music stores so be sure to check out what’s happening in the area (that’s when a gig is not actually happening in-store).
The nearby Bishopsgate Institute also offers classes ranging from Mandarin to Pilates.
