Hi everyone – welcome to my first blog post on this site. I’m an associate in A&O’s International Capital Markets (ICM) practice, and this page will hopefully give you a little window into what life is like, at work and play within the firm.
As for my own story, lets begin with my name. Malavika. Pronounced Maa-leh-vik-aah.
Not Malakiva. Not Malaysia. And definitely definitely not Malaria (Microsoft autocorrect, you slime). I grew up in India, where my name is considered decidedly more pronounceable, and was recruited into A&O as part of their global recruitment campaign – one of the indications of how the firm is becoming more and more international from the bottom upwards, in my opinion. It was pretty exciting (and in parts, intimidating) to move to London and start with a clean slate. I began the training contract with A&O in 2009 (rotating through the Banking, Litigation, Corporate and ICM teams), and those two years passed incredibly quickly – almost before I knew it, I qualified as a solicitor in 2011.
I currently work within the ICM department, within the sub group that deals with securitisation and other structured finance products. Living and working in London can be a whirlwind at any time, but working in the City at a particularly tumultuous time for financial institutions in Europe definitely does add an original twist to the experience. I’ll try and give you a flavour of what my days here are like in the coming months, but in the meanwhile – any questions or comments, do ask!
