Banking

Work with leading global financial institutions

Ours is a leading International Finance practice acting for banks, financial houses and corporates. We advise on complex cross-border and domestic transactions in all major financial centres. Few firms can match the quality of our people, the clarity of our documentation, our top-tier position across the full range of financial products and the breadth of our global reach. Our specialisms include asset finance, capital markets, derivatives, financial services regulation, global loans, leveraged finance, project finance, real estate finance, restructuring, securitisation, telecoms finance, and trade finance.

We advise over 800 lenders and borrowers on deals covering at least 100 jurisdictions. We have more than 600 Finance lawyers in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and North America, and have developed a practice which provides technically advanced and creative solutions to all our clients’ structuring and negotiating needs. We work for the leading financial institutions across the globe and as a result there is almost always an international element to transactions. Typically, a trainee will prepare information for counsel, draft documents and letters, liaise with clients, attend meetings and oversee completion matters and signings. The work is challenging but the banking department ethos is underpinned by team work and camaraderie.

Notable transactions our banking lawyers have worked on recently include advising:

  • ABN Amro, Barclays, Merrill Lynch, UBS and Commerzbank as mandated lead arrangers and underwriters in relation to a EUR 35bn credit facility for Porsche AG;
  • GE and DVB (supported by the Norwegian export credit agency, GIEK) on the USD350m pre- and post-delivery debt financing of the Sevan Driller, a sophisticated ultra-deep water drillship under construction in China for Sevan Marine;
  • UBS as arranger and underwriter in connection with the financing of the USD1.2bn acquisition of the Almatis Group by Dubai International Capital;
  • the administrators on the Metronet restructuring, the largest formal insolvency procedure ever seen in the UK;
  • the export credit agencies and commercial lenders providing finance to the project on the landmark USD10bn Saudi Kayan Petrochemical Complex in A1-Jubail Industrial City in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which will be one of the world's largest petrochemical complexes when completed; and
  • the Nasdaq Stock Market Inc on UK and EU regulatory matters.

Our practice has won a host of awards in recent years including Banking Team of the Year at the British Legal Awards 2007.
