"I gained a feel for the friendly and approachable atmosphere of the firm"

Selecting a training contract from the mass of law firms is not the easiest of tasks. Researching and attending presentations are certainly useful, however, experiencing first hand the inner workings of any firm through a vacation scheme was, for me, priceless in helping to choose the right firm.

I chose to complete a vacation scheme with Allen & Overy for two reasons. Firstly, the firm's leading practices across the commercial spectrum and their international perspective make them instantly attractive. I was keen to see what role I could play in a large City-based firm. Secondly, I was excited to apply the theory I was learning at University to a practical situation in an office environment.

The vacation scheme was a wonderful opportunity to experience working life in the firm and in the City. I spent time in the Corporate Department (where the work my supervisor was involved in was on the front page of the Evening Standard the following day!) and in Allen & Overy's leading Banking Department. I felt instantly welcomed and involved in both departments and enjoyed attending client meetings, completing research tasks and drafting letters. Alongside working with my trainer, I learned a great deal from my trainee 'buddy' and worked with other vacation students to prepare a presentation on one of Allen & Overy's key clients. As a result, I gained an excellent feel for the friendly and approachable atmosphere of the firm across their diverse practice areas.

Coupled with the work experience, I made an effort to take part in the firm’s thriving pro bono scheme and enjoyed the fun-packed social calendar which included evening boat trips along the Thames, exploring Spitalfields and a trip to the Royal Courts of Justice.

Completing the 'hands-on' scheme at Allen & Overy left no doubt in my mind that it was the place to train. The vacation programme offers exposure to an impressive client base and the opportunity to work with a leading firm in a friendly and professional environment where you are encouraged to
take responsibility – and to enjoy doing so. Now that I have started on the Legal Practice Course (LPC), I look forward to taking part in the Allen & Overy extra curricular programme in preparation for my first day!
