First-hand experience of working in a legal environment is the best way to understand the career you are applying for and to demonstrate your commitment, so we really do expect you to gain some relevant experience.  If you are applying for a vacation placement you may not have had a chance to do that yet so make sure you demonstrate transferable skills from other areas.  Open days and campus presentations are also a good way to find out more about the firms you're interested in.
