City University Law Society Christmas Party
On December 9th 2009, City University Law Society held its Christmas Party in association with Allen & Overy. This year, we held the party aboard the Royal Princess and cruised along the River Thames from Westminster to Greenwich and back.
As the party began with the departure of the boat, all 200 of the guests (nearly reduced to 199 after a VERY late arrival) were greeted with a glass of sparkling wine or orange juice along with a selection of party food that lasted all of 10 minutes around the hungry students eager for complimentary food.
As we navigated past landmarks such as The City, Tower Bridge and Canary Wharf, the external front deck (or as the maritime students were proudly announcing, the bow) quickly filled with students, excited to see landmarks from one of the world’s great cities.
Meanwhile inside, the DJ began his four hour set. Undoubtedly, the well-stocked bar assisted the rhythmically-challenged members of the society who were seemingly oblivious to the impact of Facebook in the sobering light of day.
Upon passing the O2 Arena and subsequently the Thames barrier (I won’t reveal the identity of the person marvelling at the ‘ships’ in perfect formation across the river, oblivious to the fact that they are actually flood defences – blame the Corona), the boat was turned round and directed back to Westminster.
The boat arrived at the pier just before midnight. Some argued that this was perfect as it allowed them to catch the nearby tube home rather than the soap-opera of the night bus. Others, however, were happy as they could still make it to Leicester Square for the after party.
In all, the night was a great success and on behalf of CULS, I would like to thank A&O for their kind support and hope that we will be able to work with them again in the future.
