Allen & Overy Cocktail Evening at Durham University

The Allen & Overy Cocktail Evening was Durham Law Society’s first event of Epiphany term held on Monday 31st January. It was held at the Slug & Lettuce, one of the largest venues the Law Society has used. This was a new venue which worked fantastically for the purpose. We were able to book off a large downstairs area with numerous sofas, tables and a bar, in order that the event was intimate.

We were fortunate to have two trainees from A&O present at the event, and the attendees appreciated the opportunity to ask questions on a wide array of topics, from A&O’s new six month LPC programme, to long-term career prospects or living and working in London.

The event was extremely popular, with tickets selling out earlier than expected. The night also went very well, with members staying at the event until the Slug and Lettuce closed. We had also negotiated with a local club to ensure half price entrance and queue-jump for all ticketholders.

Overall, the event proved to be an informal yet insightful opportunity to gain further information about the firm from the perspective of a trainee. Furthermore, the trainees provided valuable advice about vacation schemes and training contracts and a realistic insight into life as a trainee solicitor. The event was popular and well-received and we hope to host such an event with Allen & Overy again next year.
